- longitudinal study
- Rutter tracked development of 165 Romanian orphan studies adopted into UK families
- 111 under 2 years old at time of adoption, rest under 4
- recruited a comparison group of 52 British children adopted before the age of 6 months
- assesed childrens physical and cogntive progress at the outset and then every 4 years
