AIM- investigate whether causes of juvenile delinquency could be down to deprivation

PROCEDURE

  1. used history of patients at clinic where he worked
  2. identified 44 cases of theft and 44 controls, all emotionally maladjusted
  3. he looked for signs of affectionless psychopathy and evidence for maternal deprivation

  • 14/44 thieves displayed affectionless psychopathy whilst none of control group did
  • 86% of affectionless thieves had separations from mother in early childhood
  • early childhood separations are linked to emotional maladjustments later in life

  • for ethical reasons research tends to use the case study method, high on ecological validity as data is based on real life
  • not all children react to separation in the same way , so possible that others develop maternal deprivation down to other factors such as emotional problems
