Who could vote in Ancient Rome?
Male citizens from the age of 15 and they had to vote in person
The Centuriate Assembly
The Censor decides how the centuriate will be divided. Has to be divided into 193 voting blocks and the wealthy get more blocks. They vote on war and peace. Higher magistrates like consuls with imperium (military power) were elected by this assembly.
The Tribal Assembly
Divided into 35 tribes based on geography by the Censor. Even if you moved, you would saty with your og tribe. This assembly elected the lesser magistrates without imperium because it was the non-military assembly. They overtime gained greater decision-making power than the centuriate.
The Senate
Advisory body so couldn’t make laws, they we chosen by the censor. Had to be wealthy men who can’t trade. Typically were quaestors first. Still held great influence because of their wealth and connections.
The elected magistrates of the Roman Republic
Quaestor, Aedile, Praetor, Consul
Cursus honorum
Laid out order in which offices were to be held and minimum age.
Quaestor
Minimum age was 30, manages finances of treasury or higher magistrates and up to 20 were elected annually. This role would normally lead to a seat in the Senate later on.
Aedile
Minimum age was 36, responsible for city infrastructure, commerce, and festival. Had to pay for these themselves. 2 were elected by the Plebeian Assembly and another 2 by the Tribal Assembly.
Praetor
Minimum age was 39, they held imperium and served many roles such as judges, army leaders, province governors. Typically 8 elected annually but this was later increased.
Consul
Minimum age was 42, shared power and authority of a king, led armies, presided over law courts and made decrees. 2 were elected annually. Would often be promoted to command of a province after a term in office.
Censor
2 elected every 5 years, responsible for counting and assigning citizens to centuries and appointing senators.
Dictator
Appointed by senate in times of trouble and held unlimited power for a max of 6 months. Caesar is an example.
Tribune of the Plebs
10 elected annually by the Plebeian assembly. Introduced legislation to the assembly.
