Marian Reforms (Gaius Marius)
Only people with land could join the military. Increasing the need for professionalization.
What are legions?
Sections that were divided into 10 cohorts and had about 5000 soldiers. Led by a legatus who was typically a former consul or praetor. An eagle was commonly used as the standard of the legion. Legions came together to form armies.
The Roman Legionary
Limited to free men with Roman citizenship. Legionaires served as the backbone of the Roman army. Were given the whole equipment set (helmet, shield, cuirass, sword and etc.). They were given cash or land after retirement. Veteran colonies were often used to pacify region.
Auxiliaires
Troops enlisted from the provinces. Filled specialist roles such as cavalry, archers, and slingers. They were granted citizenship after they were done serving.
Marching camp
Were built at night by the Roman engineers. It’s where they would rest.
Vici
Settlements developed to accomodate troops such as brothels and shops.
