Hip extension

A

0-20 degrees
Test position: prone with knees extended
End feel: firm
Alignment:
Axis- lateral aspect of hip joint using greater trochanter of femur as reference
Proximal arm- lateral midline of pelvis
Distal arm- lateral midline of femur using lateral epicondyle as reference
***keep an eye on pt. to make sure they don’t rotate

Hip flexion

A

0-120 degrees
Test position: supine with knees extended; then flex the knee during test
End feel: soft
Alignment:
Axis- lateral aspect of the hip joint using greater trochanter of femur as reference
Proximal arm- lateral midline of pelvis
Distal arm- lateral midline of femur using lateral epicondyle as reference

Hip abduction

A

0-45 degrees
Test position: supine with knees extended
End feel: firm
Alignment:
Axis- ASIS of extremity being measured
Proximal arm- imaginary horizontal line from one ASIS to the other
Distal arm- anterior midline of femur using midline of patella for reference
*** keep toes pointed up to the ceiling

Hip adduction

A

0-15 to 20 degrees
Test position: supine with knees extended
End feel: firm
Alignment:
Axis- ASIS of extremity being measured
Proximal arm- imaginary horizontal line from one ASIS to the other
Distal arm- anterior midline of femur using midline of patella for reference
***move other leg out of the way of the one being tested

Hip internal and external rotation

A
0-45 degrees
Test position: sitting
End feel: firm
Alignment: 
Axis- anterior aspect of patella
Proximal arm- perpendicular to floor/ parallel to supporting surface
Distal arm- anterior midline of lower leg, using crest of tibia and point midway between two malleoli for reference 
***towel under knee
