Role of Medicine Flashcards

1
Q

McKeown Hypothesis

A

The major drivers of reduction in disease rates throughout history has been nutrition and living conditions, even more than clean water and sanitation

His data has since been labeled as highly suspect, although it is generally agreed that these factors were still of high import, and certainly more important than medical care, although perhaps not as much as clean water and sanitation

Q

“Gender Dysphoria”

A

DSM-V’s new name for the older “Gender Identity Disorder,” which categorizes all transgender people as medically ill. The intent of the change is to recognize that it is not an illness, but specifies a medical need in some transgender individuals to undergo gender reassignment surgery as part of their transition.

While on one hand transgender individuals should not be labeled as somehow inherently “sick,” insurers refuse to pay for this surgery unless there is some “medical need,” perpetuating this dilemma.
