Role of diagnostic testing Flashcards
Definition of diagnosis
identification of a disease or condition by a scientific evaluation of physical signs, symptoms, history, lab test results and procedures
Types of diagnostics
Clinical Differential Lab Nursing Physical
Clinical Diagnosis definition
made on the basis of medical history and physical examination without the benefit of lab tests, x-rays and other forms of diagnostic testing
Differential Diagnosis definition
distinguishing between two or more similar disease with similar symptoms by systematically comparing their signs and symptoms
Lab Diagnosis
study secretions, excretions or tissue
Conducted through chemical, microscopic or bacterialogic means
Nursing Diagnosis
Clinical judgement about individual, family or community experiences/responses to actual or potential health problems
Identifies problems that result from a disorder
Physical Diagnosis
Physical manifestations of health, disease and illness revealed in the physical examination, as guided by the patient’s complete history and supported by various lab tests
Clinical Practise definition
sound and consistent info gathered from pt
Clinical thinking definition
info interpreted and put into theoretical/knowledge context
pt treatment definition
applied on the basis of clinical evidence, guidelines and EBP
Reassessment
has the treatment worked, is it appropriate, is the pt presenting with a different condition
Type 1 error
false positive (false alarm)
Type II error
false negative
Sensitivity
If a person has a disease, how often will the test be positive.
If the test is highly sensitive and the test result is negative, you can be nearly certain that they don’t have the disease
Specificity
The ability of the test to correctly identify pts without the disease.
If the test result for a highly specific test is positive you can be nearly certain that they actually have the disease
