Rogers: Person Centered Theory Flashcards
The two basic assumption of Rogers:
Formative Tendency
Actualizing Tendency
when this need exists without any conditions or qualifications.
Unconditional Positive Regard
this tendency is the only motive people possess
Actualizing Tendency
they perceive that their parents, peers, or partners love and accept them only if they meet those people’s expectations and approval.
Conditions of Worth
can occur suddenly, or it can take place gradually over a long period of time
Disorganization
Roger’s believed that there is a tendency for all matter, both organic and inorganic, to evolve from simpler to more complex forms.
Formative Tendency
whereas vulnerability exists when we have no awareness of the incongruence within ourself.
anxiety and threat
follow an if - then framework
Person centered theory
the tendency to actualize the self as perceive in awareness
self actualization
congruence exists when a person’s organismic experiences are matched by an awareness of them and by an ability and willingness to openly express these feelings.
Counselor Congruence
two chief defenses are:
Distortion
Denial
Distortion - we misinterpret an experience in order to fit it into some aspect of our self concept.
Denial - we refuse to perceive an experience in a awareness
this happens if the organism and the self are not aligned.
Incongruence
many people have difficulty accepting genuine compliments and positive, even when deserved.
Denial of Positive Experience
strong desire to learn and willingness to change
enhancement
the tendency within all humans to move toward completion or fulfillment of potentials.
