Rocks and Weathering Flashcards
What is an igneous rock
A rock that is formed from cooled magma or lava
What are the 2 types of igneous rock
Intrusive and Extrusive Igneous rock
What are the differences between intrusive and extrusive igneous rock
Intrusive rocks are formed from magma inside a volcano and extrusive igneous rocks are formed from lava on the earths surface
Why do extrusive igneous rocks have larger crystals than intrusive rocks
Because they cool slower
Which type of igneous rock have the largest crystals
Intrusive rocks have the larger crystals
What are the main properties of igneous rocks
Interlocking crystals, not porous, never contain fossils very hard, dont let water through
Why dont igneous rocks contain fossils
Because the heat from the magma/lava would burn the remains
What are sedimentary rocks made from
Small grains of sediment that have been pressure into combining
What are some features of sedimentary rocks
Porous, have layers, sometimes contain fossils, crumble easily
How are fossils formed
the animals remains get stuck in the sediment and then an impresssion is left in the sediment and the bones turn to rock
What are metamorphic rocks
Rocks that have been changed because of heat or pressure
What type of rock is a rock morphed by heat and pressure
Metamorphic rocks
Main features of metamorphic rocks
Crystals not interlocking, Wavy layers, squashed fossils, harder than sedimentary rocks
What gas is most common in our atmosphere
Nitrogen
What substance is found in all living things
Carbon
