Rocks Flashcards
Rock
a rock is a mixture of materials minerals, glass, and organic.
Igneous Rock
rock formed when molten cools and hardens.
Metamorphic Rock
Rocks that have changed due to temperate or pressure increases that undergo a change in composition.
Sedimentary Rock
Form when sediments become pressed or cemented together or when sediments participate out of solution.
Extrusive igneous rock (EN=ON)
Are formed when lava cools on/near surface.
INtrusive igneous rock (IN=INSIDE)
When magma cools below the earth’s surface.
Foliated
Are metamorphic rocks in which the mineral grains flatten and and line up in parrell bands.
Nonfoliated
a type of metamorphic rock created when mineral grains change, grow, and rearrange, but don’t form bands.
Detrital rock
Sedimentary rocks are made from broken fragments of other rock that compacted and cemented together.
Oganic sedimentary rock
are formed from once living things.
Cheimcal sedimentary rock
Form when minerals precipitate from a solution or are left behind after evaporation.
Sediments
Sediments are loose materials such as rock fragments, mineral grains, bits of plants and animals that have been transported by wind water or glaciers.
Magma
Molten rock under earth’s surface.
Compaction
Happens when sediments are pressed together to form solid rock.
Cementation
Will cause larger sediments to stick together.
