earthquakes Flashcards
crust
earth’s outer most layer
earthquake
movement of the ground caused by the waves of energy releases as move along the faults.
elastic limit
the limit of how far it will stretch or bend.
epicenter
point on earth’s surface directly above the focus.
Fault
Surface along which rocks break and move.
focus
Point in earth’s interior where the energy releases and occurrs
Inner core
center of the earth -iron and nickle
Magnitude
measure of the energy reaches in an earthquake.
Mantle
largest layer, above outer core. -silicon, magnesium, oxygen and iron.
Moho discontinuity
boundary between earth’s crust an the mantle -seismic waves travel faster below the Moho.
Normal fault
rock above the fault surface moves downward in relation to the rock below the earths surface.
Outer core
liquid layer -silicon, magnesium, oxygen and iron.
Primary wave
earthquake waves that move back and forth same direction are called seismic waves, too.
Reverse fault
rocks above the fault are forced up[ and over the rocks below the fault.
Secondary wave
In an earthquake waves that causes particles in the rock to move at right angles to the direction of the wave.
