physical and chemical changes Flashcards
Physical property
Characteristics of a substance that like color, shapes, texture, mass, volume, and density.
Phase
All solids share two characteristics, definite shape and a definite volume.
Crystal
Solids arranged in a regulating, repeating pattern.
Gas
Gases do not have a definite shape or volume.
Plasma
Plasma is a phase that has extremely high energy which is dangerous. It is rare on earth but not in space.
Liquid
Liquids have no definite shape but has a definite volume.
Melting
The change of a solid into a liquid.
Melting Point
The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
Freezing
A phase change of a liquid to a solid.
Freezing point
The freezing point of a substance is the same as the melting point.
Vaporization
The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas.
Evaporation
Vaporization happening at the surface of a liquid.
Boiling
The process in which particles inside as well on the surface of a liquid change to a gas
Boiling point
The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid phase to the gas phase
Condensation
When a substance in the gas phase looses heat energy and changes into a liquid.
Sublimation
When a substance changes from the solid form directly to the gas form. example Dry ice.
Chemical Property
Properties that describe how a substance changes into other new substances.
Flammability
It is the ability to burn. when a substance is burned a new substance is created.
Chemical change
Changes a substance undergoes when they turn into other substances.
Chemical reaction
Another name for chemical change.
Amorphous solids
Amorphous solids are solid that lose there shape under certain conditions. Examples wax, glass, and tar.
Viscosity
The resistance of liquids to move.
solid
Has a definite shape and volume.
