ROCKS Flashcards
any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter and categorized by the minerals included, its chemical composition and the way in which it is formed.
Rocks
A rock from a Latin word “ignis” which means fire and its parent material is magma
Igneous Rocks
A texture of igneous rock has smaller crystal due to the faster rate of cooling of the magma
Fine-grained Igneous rock (“Aphanitic”)
A texture of igneous rock has larger crystal due to the slower rate of cooling of the magma
Coarse-grained Igneous Rock (“Phaneritic”)
Types of igneous rocks based on composition that are magmas associated with crystal spreading
Mafic
Importance of Igneous Rocks
contains fossils, coal, petroleum, and natural gas are major energy source, and iron, aluminum, and manganes are used in construction industry
Rocks that formed from the desposition of different materials on Earth’s surface
Sedimentary Rocks
2 Major groups of Sedimentary Rocks
Clastic and Non-Clastic
They form from the accumulation and lithification of sediments derived from the breakdown of pre-existing rocks
Clastic
They precipated from concentrated solutions or from the accumulation or biologic or organic material
Nonclastic
Rocks derived from igneous or sedimentary rocks that were exposed to high pressure, high temp or a combination of both deep below the surface of Earth
Metamorphic Rocks
