rockirdd Flashcards
what are the 4 things that can happen to a rock
- It can be weathered/eroded and turned into sediment
-Heat and pressure can cause it to change into a different metamorphic rock
-It can be melted back into magma and then re-form an igneous rock
compaction and cementation
what is rock cycle
igneous to sediment : weathering and erosion
sediment to sedimentary: cementation and compaction
sedimentary to magma: melt
what are the compositional layers of earth?
crust, (oceanic crust) core, mantle.
what are the mechanical layers of earth
inner core, outer core, mesosphere, asthenosphere, lithosphere
what is the mesosphere
lower mantle, solid, makes up 84% of the Earth’s volume
it is essentially the coldest layer, and is located third and in the middle, as ‘meso’ means middle.
what is the asthenosphere
upper mantle, not quite liquid, but can slowly flow
what is the difference of lithosphere and crust
The crust is the thin, outermost layer of the Earth that is composed differently than the mantle. The lithosphere is a thick layer that contains both the crust and the upper mantle
what is the lithosphere
A lithosphere is the rigid, outermost rocky shell of a terrestrial planet or natural satellite.
