flight Flashcards
Which one does not belong?
yaw
pitch
thrust
Roll
thrust , thrust is one of the four forces of flight.
How do you overcome drag?
Increase thrust
Increase Lift
Decrease Weight
Increase thrust
How does an aircraft generate lift
Bernoulli’s (20%) vs deflected downwash (80%), Newton’s 3rd law
What is Thrust Vectoring?
= The ability to change the angle of the thrust is called thrust vectoring, or vectored thrust.
What parts of an aircraft are responsible for Yaw, pitch, and roll? (three of them)
elevators, rudder, ailerons
What does VTOL stand for and what is it?
VTOL= Vertical takeoff and landing
A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is one that can take off and land vertically without relying on a runway.
What does STOL stand for and what is it?
It is called a Short Take Off & Landing (or S.T.O.L.) aircraft because it needs only a short stretch of water or runway to take off or to land.
What is an airfoil?
An airplane’s wing has a special shape called an airfoil. The airfoil is shaped so that the air traveling over the top of the wing travels farther and faster than the air traveling below the wing.
What are the three main movements in bird flight?
Power stroke, Back stroke, and the glide
What are propellers and what is its use?
The propellers are fast moving blades.
The purpose of the propeller is to provide a method of propulsion so the aircraft can move forward.
what are jet engines
Jet engines move the airplane forward with a great force that is produced by a tremendous thrust and causes the plane to fly very fast.
How much lift is accounted for in Bernoulli’s Principle?
20%
How much lift is accounted for in Deflected Downwash?
80%
What is Laminar Flow
laminar flow, type of fluid flow in which the fluid travels smoothly or in regular paths,
What is “Stall”?
Stall in flight is a condition where the wings are no longer producing lift. E.g: angle of attack too high, or plane too slow.
