Q

How did the author end the story? (Blurt on paper, easier to memorize.)

A

They ended the story with Nya and Dep talking about the leader of the workers in astonishment of how the worker was Dinka - the Nuer and Dinka were enemies for hundreds of years. The story ends with Nya introducing herself to the leader and thanking them for the water, and the leader introducing himself as Salva, confirming that Salva’s project was succeeding.

Q

“Salva blinked away the tears and took his first step into a new life in America.” explain what this means.

A

“Salva blinked away the tears and took his first step into a new life in America.”

The way the text is formatted tells us that Salva could feel separation anxiety/worries over leaving the airport. He says in the book that leaving the airport felt like leaving his old life behind forever - his family, his village, Sudan.. I can infer that by Salva leaving the airport despite his feelings about it means that he most probably has lost the hope that his family could still be alive, and he feels like he would be losing his connection with his homeland, Sudan. This affects the reader’s experience because instead of picturing Salva keeping hope and trying for his family, we see him instead as someone who is moving on.

Q

What was involved in the Lost Boys coming to America?

A

The Lost Boys had to fill out multiple forms, go through medical examinations, and were given many pieces of clothing. There was difficulty with communication, said in the chapter; “The woman spoke mostly English. Sometimes she said a word or two in Arabic, but she did not speak the language well. She tried her best to speak slowly, but she had many things to tell them and Salva worried that he might misunderstand something.” I can infer that a language barrier was an issue.

Q

. Explain Salva’s experiences with clothes.

A

Salva lived in a poorer country, and with the fact that he was in a refugee camp that only gave clothes whenever they had donations made it so that he had only a pair of clothes, which had holes in them and were worn down. When given so many clothes to wear at the same time, he seems bewildered by the sheer amount - he’d probably never worn that many clothes at once, let alone owned that many.

Q

Explain Salva’s experience with Coca-Cola.

A

Coca-Cola was a drink that seemed to bring back memories long ago. It was rare for him to get a drink such as Coca-Cola. When he first sipped it, he described it as “bubbles jumping around in his mouth”. It gave him nostalgia, and maybe a bittersweet feeling from remembering times with his family who he thought was dead.

Q

Explain Salva’s experience with planes.

A

In the plane, Salva seemed to be in wonder about how a huge machine could lift off into the air. He is completely new to planes, and definitely is not used to the sounds it made to get into the air. Once the plane was high enough, Salva was in awe of how ‘small’ everything got when he looked outside, knowing that there were thousands of people, yet he couldn’t see any.

Q

Explain Salva’s experience with Winter.

A

The winter would most definitely have been a shock to him - he’d never felt such cold before, but it gave him an understanding of why he had to wear so many clothes at once. He thought that the people would have frozen in place from the cold, but they were used to it, unlike him, so he may have thought that he was a little different.

What is Salva studying at school and why did he choose this as a college major?

A

Salva is studying business at school, choosing it as his college major because he wants to do something to help the people back in Sudan. He probably does this because when he was younger, no one had helped Sudan, so he wants to be the one to make a difference.

Q

What are the difficulties involved in Salva reconnecting with his father?

A

Some difficulties that Salva has faced was the fact that there was no telephone service nor mail service in the remote part of Southern Sudan, making it much harder to communicate with his father to make sure he is still there. Salva dwells and worries on this topic, scared that his father could be dismissed from the hospital before he can get there, and the chance to meet his father again would slip through his fingers like sand. He had to get permits, fill out dozens of forms, organize plane flights and car transportation in a place where there were no airports or roads.
