RM: Types of experiments Flashcards
What is a lab experiment?
-experimenters have full control over what happens in the experiment and all EVs
-the IV is the only variable which can affect the DV
-ppts are aware they are being studied
What is a field experiment?
-experiments that take place in natural settings
-they avoid the artificial nature of lab studies
-ppts may not know they are being studied
What is a natural experiment?
-the experimenter has no control over the IV/it cannot be controlled
-The relationship between the IV and DV is not certain and cannot be replicated
What is a quasi-experiment?
-ppts cannot be randomly assigned to conditions
-researchers have no control over the variables
What is a standardized procedure?
-a consistent/uniform set of instructions/methods used in a research study
-allows an experiment to be retested.
What is reliability?
-measure of whether something stays the same/an experiment is consistent
What is random allocation?
-assigning ppts to random groups in a random and unbiased way
What is internal validity?
-the extent that a research study accurately identifies a relationship between variables
-rules out alternative explanations
What is ecological validity?
-the extent that the finding of a study can be generalized to real-world settings/situations
What is mundane realism?
-the degree to which an experiment/study resembles real-life situations
Strengths of lab experiments?
-high control over EVs- increases internal validity
-replication (possible due to standardisation)
Limitations of lab experiments?
-environment may be artificial- findings have low ecological validity
-tasks can be artificial- lack mundane realism
-demand characteristics
Strengths of field experiments?
-more mundane realism
-ppts do not know they are involved- higher ecological validity
-less demand characteristics
Limitations of field experiments?
-less control of EVs- lower internal validity
-ethical issues (ppts unaware they are being studied)
Strengths of natural experiments?
-provide opportunities for research that might not be done for practical/ethical reasons
-high ecological validity
