happens when an older memory interferes with a newer one

teacher cannot remember current students names
Procedure for McGeoch & McDonald (1931)
-ppts had to learn 10 adjectives (list A), then one of 6 other lists (list B), which varied in similarity to A
1- synonyms, 2- antonyms, 3-unrelated words, 4-consonant syllables, 5- 3 digit no.s, 6- no list
Results for McGeoch & McDonald (1931)
-found recall was worse when lists A and B were closest in similarity
-supports idea of retroactive interference- more similar the new material is to the previously learned, greater the interference

-made recall worse
What are the explanations for effects of similarity?
