Mem: Coding, Capacity, and Duration AO1 Flashcards
What is duration of memory?
-the length of time info can be stored in memory
What is capacity of memory?
-the amount of info that can be stored in memory
What is the coding of memory?
-a process in which the sensory info is modified + stored in the brain
-the most common kinds are visual, acoustic, and semantic
-the LTM and STM are separate with different stores
What are the different memory stores?
-Sensory register- initial contact for stimuli
-STM- the info we are currently aware of/are thinking about
-LTM- storage of info out of our awareness
What is the capacity of sensory memory?
-large capacity
-takes in an enormous amount of data
What is the capacity of STM?
-has a limited capacity- between 7 +/-2 items
-found by Miller’s research
What is the capacity of LTM?
-has a potentially unlimited capacity
-unknown when the limit will be reached
How is STM assessed?
-using a digit span task- how many random numbers can you remember
What did Jacob’s research find on capacity?
-first to use digit span task
-average span for numbers= 9.3 items
-average span for letters= 7.3 items
What did Miller’s research find on capacity?
-reviewed psychological research + concluded the capacity is 7 +/- 2
What did Miller suggest about chunking?
argued capacity for remembering things can be increased if you chunk them together
What is the duration of memory in the sensory store (SS)?
less than 1 second
What is the duration of STM?
about 18-30 secs unless info is rehearsed
What is the duration of LTM?
lasts potentially infinitely
How is info encoded in the SS?
modality specific
(in the same way its recieved)
