Mem: MSM AO1 Flashcards
What is a model?
-a visual rep. of how something words
-allows predictions of human behavior to be made
-can ask q’s/provide a’s which can’t be asked/given irl
-can be altered to relate to reality
What is significant about the model?
-first memory model
-inspired lots of research
How many memory stores does it suggest ppl have?
How do the stores differ?
-3 separate/distinct stores
-differ in coding, capacity, duration
How does info pass through each store?
-it’s a linear + sequential model, info passes through in order\
-passes from store-store if conditions are met
-SS -> STM = attending to the info
What is the C, C, D of the SS?
-coding: modality specific (encoded how it entered)
-capacity: very large
-duration: less than 1/100th of the info reaches the STM (attends to 1/100th of info coming in)
How does info transfer from SS to STM?
If attention is focused on the info, it will be transferred
What stores are in the SS?
-iconic store: where visual images are kept for a short period (visual encoding)
-echoic store: where auditory senses are kept for a short period (acoustic encoding)
-haptic store: sensory memory retains physical senses of touch + internal muscle tensions (touch encoding)
What is the C, C, D of the STM store?
Coding: acoustically
Capacity: 7 +/- 2 items
Duration: 18-30 secs unless rehearsed
Who discovered duration of STM store?
Peterson & Peterson
What did Baddeley’s research find?
Performance was worse when additional info is given in the same modality you are storing the info (displaces it)
How does info get lost in the STM?
-will decay if not rehearsed
-new info can ‘push out’ old due to limited capacity (displacement)
What is the C, C, D of the LTM store?
-coding: semantically
-capacity: potentially unlimited
-duration: potentially infinite
Who found coding of LTM?
-Baddeley
Who found duration of the LTM?
-Bahrick et al
How does info enter the LTM?
Moved from STM-LTM via maintenance rehearsal
