Mem: LTM AO1 Flashcards
Who proposed there are 3 types of LTM?
Endel Tulving, 1967
What are the three types of LTM called?
episodic memory- knowledge of personal events
semantic memory- general knowledge
procedural memory- knowledge of how to do things
Describe episodic memory
-responsible for storing info about personal events we have experienced- any time in past
-Has to be consciously recalled- declarative (explicit) memory.
Given an example of episodic memory
1st day at school
What three elements are involved in episodic memory?
Details of the event
The event itself
The emotion
Are episodic memories time stamped?
yes
What region are the brain are episodic memories associated with?
hippocampus and right prefrontal cortex (Tulving 1994)
Describe semantic memory
Responsible for storing info about the world- included knowledge about the meaning of words, as well as general knowledge.
Has to be consciously recalled- declarative memory.
Give an example of semantic memory
London is the capital of England
Are semantic memories time stamped?
no, even though they may begin as episodic
What region are the brain are semantic memories associated with?
Associated with the left prefrontal cortex (Tulving 1994)
Describe procedural memory
-part of LTM responsible for knowing how to do things + carry out motor tasks.
-memories that are hard to explain
-does not have to be recalled consciously- non-declarative (implicit)
Give an example of procedural memory
how to ride a bike
are procedural memories time stamped?
no
What region are the brain are procedural memories associated with?
The cerebellum and motor cortex
