RLE: I&O Flashcards
How much fluid should a person drink in a 24 hour period?
2400-2600mL per day
What is the minimum amount of urine that will be made by the kidneys each hour?
at least 30mL per hour
An 8 oz glass of water given with medications equals ____ mL of water
240 mL
Are jello or ice-cream considered a liquid or solid?
liquid
How much of ice is considered a liquid?
half of the amount given (6 oz glass of ice would be recorded as 3 oz or 90 mL intake if all is consumed)
What all is included when measuring fluid intake?
Drinks, jello, ice cream, ice, IV fluids, tube feeding
If someone is ordered a tube feeding at 60 mL/hr how many mL’s will they have received in an 8 hour period
480 mL
When are IV fluids TOTALED and how are they entered in I&O?
IV fluids are totaled at the end of each shift and entered as a fluid intake
Devices for collecting and measuring output
foley bags, urinals, bedpans, graduated cylinders, hats, and basins
output is measured and usually totaled every shift, with a grand total at the end of 24 hours
When is output measured and totaled?
How is I&O ordered?
I&O may be ordered by a physician, but does not require a physician’s order
In order to monitor I&O what will be expected from a nurse?
to be able to subtract the output from intake to determine if a discrepancy exists
What is the intake and output for the following as well as the fluid deficit?
Mrs. Smith drank 720 mL and received 800 mL of IV fluids. You emptied her foley bag and measured a total of 1200 mL’s of urine for the entire shift.
Intake = 1520 Output = 1200
Fluid deficit= 320
If the fluid deficit of a patient is 320 ml where did the rest of that fluid go if not excreted as urine?
tissues, diarrhea, diaphoretic (sweating)
