Rivet Joint Layouts Flashcards
What are the four basic steps to establish a basic layout for repair of aircraft skin?
Establish a reference, bisect a line, lay out a square or rectangle, lay out a corner radius.
When making repairs, the corners of the damaged area or the repair patch will be rounded to a minimum of_____ radius.
1/4 inch
What is the purpose of rounding the corners of damaged areas or repair patches?
To relieve stress concentration that develop at sharp corners.
Where would you choose to use a raised head rivet?
Where aerodynamic smoothness is not required.
Where would you choose to used a countersunk rivet?
Where aerodynamic smoothness is of prime concern.
What would happen if you chose rivets of a softer alloy than the metal to be riveted?
Rivets would shear. (Using too small of a rivet will also cause shearing.)
What would happen if you chose rivets of a harder alloy than the metal to be riveted?
Distortion of the metal because of the pressure required to drive the rivet. (Using too large of a rivet diameter will also result in metal distortion.)
Rivet diameters (D) are sized in what fraction of an inch and what is the minimum diameter for aircraft structural repair?
1/32, 3/32
Rivet lengths (RL) are sized in what fraction of an inch?
1/16
What fraction of an inch are bucktails measured in and how do you determine the proper size it should be?
1/16, should be 1/2D high and 1 1/2D wide.
What is the minimum edge distance a raised head rivet should be to the nearest edge of the sheet metal?
2D
What is the minimum edge distance a countersunk head rivet should be to the nearest edge of the sheet metal?
2 1/2D
What is the maximum edge distance for both types of rivets? (NOTE: Edge distance must always be in the simplest form.)
4D
What is rivet pitch?
The distance between rivets in the same row measured from rivet center to rivet center.
What is the minimum and maximum of RP and what is the normal working range?
4D-10D, 6D-8D
