Aircraft Structures Flashcards
What are the five principle units of fixed wing aircraft?**
Fuselage, wings, stabilizers, flight control surfaces, and landing gear.
What are the two general types of fuselage frame construction?
Truss and Monocoque
What fuselage frame is the most widely used type of construction in CG aircraft?
Semi-Monocoque
What is the primary structural member of wing construction?
Spar
The empennage of an aircraft is also known as what?
Tail section
What is the most prevalent landing gear configuration in aviation?
Triangle
What are the primary flight control surfaces of aircraft?
Ailerons, Elevators, and Rudder
Where are ailerons located and what do they control?
Trailing edge of each wing near the wing tip, control the aircraft’s movement around the longitudinal axis.
Where are elevators located and what do they control?
Trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer, control the aircraft’s movements around the lateral axis.
Where is the rudder located and what does it control?
Trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer, controls the aircraft’s movements around the vertical axis.
What are the secondary flight controls?
Flaps and Trim Tabs
What are flaps and where are they located?
Enable the use of landing at slower speeds and shorten the amount of runway required for takeoffs and landing. Trailing edge of wing, closest to the fuselage.
What are trim tabs and where are they located?
Aid in maintaining the flight control surface in the desired position. (auto pilot,) located on ailerons, elevators, and rudder.
What types of fuselages do helicopters use?
Monocoque or semi-monocoque or a combo of both.
Unlike fixed wing, most helicopter powerplants release exhaust and do not contribute to the forward motion of the helicopter. What % of incoming airflow is used to cool the engine?
75%
