river processes Flashcards
what is vertical erosion
it is downwards erosion
what is lateral erosion
it is sideways erosion
what is hydraulic action
it is when the water hits the side of the banks and breaks it open
what’s is abrasion
it is when rock or sedimentation that the river is carrying hits the the banks or the bed of the river breaks it up.
what is attrition
it is when stones carried by the river hit each other to make them small and more rounded
what is solution
it is when river flows over soluble rock and slowly dissolves the river bed
when does deposition take place
it occurs when the energy of the river drops and it can’t hold the sedimentation any more
what is traction
it is when larger rocks are rolled along the river bed
what is solution
it is dissolved rocks in the river water
what is suspension
it is when small bits of sediment are suspended in the water
what is saltation
it is when the river bounces the rocks because they are to heavy to suspend but to light to just roll
