glacial landforms and types of erosion Flashcards
ribbon lakes
long, narrow lakes often tens of meters deep. most ribbon lakes are a result of sever erosion of the glacial trough
hanging valleys
they are small tributary valleys above the main glacier trough. When smaller glaciers in these valleys were unable to erode down to the same level as the main glaciers.
glacial trough
a steep sided, wide and flat bottomed valley, formed by abrasion
truncated spurs
when a glacier is unable to flow round an already existing interlocking spurs, the glacier cuts straight through it forming a steep sided truncated spur
abrasion
it is the sand paper effect caused by the weight of the ice scoring the valley floor.
Plucking
when the melt water beneath a glacier freezes and bonds the bottom of the glacier to the rocky surface below. As the glacier moves loose fragments of rock get plucked away leaving a jagged rock face
Freeze thaw weathering
in the summer water gets into cracks in the rock and when it freezes it forces the rock move
