Cold environments Flashcards
1
Q
where on a global map are polar and tundra environments located
A
60 degrees north and south of the equator
2
Q
Name two things about the tundra and polar climate
A
Tundra:
- brief summer can be warm
- precipitation can be high in costal regions
Polar:
- winter temp often go bellow -50 degrees C
- have very low precipitation
3
Q
Name two things about the tundra and polar soil
A
Tundra:
- soil generally infertile
- soils are frozen ( permafrost) but in summer will melt
Polar:
-Permanently covered by ice so soils are permanently frozen
4
Q
Name two things about the tundra and polar vegetation and animals
A
Tundra:
- low growing flowering plants such as barber, arctic moss and saxifrage
- low bushes and small trees may grow in the warmer regions
polar:
- Some mosses and lichen found on the fringes of ice
- Polar bears are well adapted
5
Q
How has the arctic poppy adapted to survive
A
- The whole plant is covered with black hairs to reduce transpiration because it traps a layer of moist air and reduces the diffusion gradient
- It is heliotropic which means the it turns its face to follow the sun
- they grow among rocks because the stones absorb heat from the sun and provide moist shelter for the roots
