River Processes Flashcards
What are drainage basins?
1) source - where river begins
2) watershed - area of highland forming the edge of river basin
3) tributary - small river/stream that joins a bigger river.
4) confluence - point where two river meets.
5) mouth - where rivers meet the sea.
4 types of transportation
1) suspension -the water carries slit and clay-sized particles
2) solution - the river water dissolves some minerals.
3) saltation - particles the size of sand grains bounce over each other along the river bed
4) traction - stones roll along the river bed
erosional processes
Hydraulic action: is the Power of waves force water into cracks and increases pressure and the crack gets bigger and will eventually break
Abrasion: rocks are picked up by waves and smashed all rubbed against the cliff which will wear the rocks away
Solution: When Sea Becomes water acidic (caused by vegetation) which will dissolve the rocks such as chalk/lime stone
Attrition: rocks within the waves are smashed together and will break into smaller rocks and will become smoother
Mass movements.
Slumping - happens when the bottom of the valley side is a road by the river. The slope becomes the power, and the material above slides downwards, rotating as it does
Soil creep - Rock/particles of moves downwards due to gravity and it goes into the water and sinks to the bottom and the river may then the erode material
