Nureddin seized opportunity to remove threat of Joscelin - had him imprisoned and blinded - went against peace treaty

Nureddin deeply religious - used propaganda to convey Sunni image
1161 - undertook the Hajj
known to have established at least 40 Madrasas
Jihad used to develop concept of Holy war but also to develop stability and prosperity in his lands
Personal image
Careful to maintain image e.g. he would never make himself rich at the expense of his people
renounced alcohol and wore plain clothes

1170 - Nureddin’s brother dies - took advantage of situation and took control himself
