Help from West 1149 to 1187 Flashcards
Did the Second Crusade impact the Help from West?
Yes, impacted popularity - there were only a few real efforts to personally go on armed pilgrimage to Jerusalem - would take the fall of Jerusalem to spur on any serious action
France and England
Henry II was busy expanding the Angevin Empire much to the dismay of Phillip II - resulted in the kingdoms of France and England not make any real efforts to help the security of Outremer
Thierry of Flanders
Arrived in holy land and helped Baldwin III relieve and Muslim blockade at Krak des Chevaliers 1157
Involved in an attack on Shaizer which ultimately led to nothing
He returned to holy land in 1164 but had no significant impact on the defence of Outremer
Frederick of Tyre
In response to Nureddin’s conquest of Egypt he visited the pope in 1169 - Pope Alexander issued papal bull Inter Omnia - encouraging those in the West to crusade rather than just sending money
Phillip of Flanders
Took the cross upon hearing the news of Amalric’s death in 1174 - but prevented from travelling until 1177
Arrived in Acre in 1178 - may of had intentions to marry into the line of succession in Outremer but plans but were opposed
There were discussions of an attack on Egypt and Syria but nothing actually enacted he returned to Europe
