A
By 1160s - Fatimid dynasty that rule Egypt on the verge of collapse
Postion as vizier become unstable - by 1163 vizier Shawar had requested help from Nureddin

Role of Shirkuh
A
Nureddin sent Shirkuh to Egypt to help Shawar - initial invasion unsuccessful
1167 - successfully arrested Shawar and proclaimed himself as vizier - died a few months later - Nureddin gave position to Saladin

In order to connect land holdings in Syria and Egypt Nureddin needed to control land south of Jerusalem - clear by 1174 Saladin was asserting own power in Egypt and growing independent from Nureddin
