How did Islam start and where?
In the Middle East and it started after the prophet Muhammad recieved visions from Allah and wrote them down and began preaching and converting people
Why did many people join Islam?
Because it was simple and easy to join and portable
How did it spread rapidly?
Is spread along trade and caravan routes and was adopted by nomadic and uneducated people
What are the 2 branches of Islam?
Sunni and Shi’i
What are the three types of Muslims?
Fundamental- Koran, extreme views/terrorism
Traditional- Moderate-strong beliefs
Contemporary- Modern in modern countries
What is shariah law?
A legal framework where all aspects of a person’s life are regulated by an interpretation of the Koran
Where is shariah law enforced?
Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and some African countries
What was the Islam caliphate in Spain?
Al-Andalus and it was started by Abd-al-Rahman II
What legacy did Al-Andalus leave in Europe?
Medicine and new technology

Through seafaring traders where it was quickly adopted
What were the crusades?
A series of Holy wars between Christianity and Islam centred around Jerusalem the ‘spiritual capital’ of both religions

1096-1099, 1144-1155, 1187-1182
When were the fourth, fifth and sixth crusades
1202-1204, 1217-1221, 1228-1229
When were the seventh, eighth and ninth crusades?
1248-1254, 1270, 1271-1272
What were the bad things about the crusades?
They were very expensive and they promoted violence as a way of solving differences
