Archaeology Flashcards
What is stratigraphy?
Stratigraphy is the study of strata-which are layers of rock, you are able to date artefacts according to where you found them in these layers however this is only a rough date.
Explain Seriation
The arrangement of objects in a sequence
Linguistic dating is…
Dating by judging the changes in language styles was over time
Why is climate important when considering the dating of artefacts?
You can help you explain artefacts and the effect of the climate on people and objects. Climate can change over time so knowing the climate when an artifact was in use is important.
How deep sea and ice cores used to determine age?
By using ice cores and deep sea cores we can tell the climate of that location at a certain time.
What is pollen dating?
You can use Poland found on or around an object to help date it. You can also use Poland to tell what plants grew in what locations
Explain tree ring dating
By looking at the rings of trees you can not only tell the age of the tree, but when it fell and the conditions during growth. During a drought the rings would be smaller but during a year with lots of rain the rings would be quite thick.
What briefly is radiocarbon dating?
Radio-carbon dating measures the amount of carbon in wood, bone or many other objects. After a certain number of years carbon leaves once living material, by measuring the amount of carbon left we can tell how long ago something/someone died.
Why is it important to date an artifact
By dating and you can decide only place in time but how is occurred and the effects it had
