Bike Rio
encourages bike use on over 200km of cycle paths. However these are only in the centre and popular tourist areas.
Yellow line Express
Connects Barra da Tijuca with Rio’s North zone and the airport. Used by 70,000 vehicles each day. This has been successful at reducing congestion by 40%. Government benefit as this is a toll road.
Public buses
Run more frequently, cheap and air conditioned. Safe during the day but not at night due to high crime levels.
The Metro
The Metro is an underground system, which has been given more lines, to connect more areas of Rio and the government has invested in money for modernising stations and trains. Safest form of public transport but often overcrowded. Cheap and fast way to travel.
Gondola System
Connects the favelas to the city which opened up jobs. Locals get 2 free tickets a day. Since fallen out of use and was considered to be an Olympics Vanity project.
Uber helicopter service
Fast way for business people to commute. Only for the rich and elite. Prices start at $60.
Bus Rapid Transport
New Bus Rapid Transit corridors are created along major routes. They allow buses to get through the city quicker, as they are separated the main road network. Created 50% faster commuter times. Has linked most populous districts.
Niterio Bridge
The bridge connects Rio to the city of Niterio, it is 14km long with 8 lanes. Heavily congested but saves a 80km road journey.
