Barefoot doctors
Much cheaper and quicker than training an fully qualified doctor and covers a wider area. Doctors are elected by villages so fully trusted in community. Reduces burden on hospitals. It was uneffective as their was a lack of volunteers who are willing to do community work instead of going private.
There is a lack of funding in local community to pay, as rural health systems have been privatised.
Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT)
Used to treat acute diarrhoeal diseases. It is a mixture of water, salt and sugar. It is cheap and effective remedy for dehydration/diarrhoea. WHO estimated that 2006-2011 33% of children under 5 with diarrhoea where receiving ORS.
Vaccination Programmes
Against diseases such as polio, measles and cholera. By preventing illness in the first place at a low cost vaccination, it saves money and resources used to treat someone.
Health education
Establishment of clinics provide advice on nutrition, family planning, and health education. For example, the health education schemes in schools/community plays/songs concerning AIDS.
Very effective to illiterate populations.
Life straws
Oxfam have provided life straws, so people can drink clean water without a water pump.
Water pump
Water Aid have put water pumps in areas, so they can have access to clean water.
