The mountains around Rio de Janeiro exacerbates traffic flow by hemming in the city and restricting the available space to build transport infrastructure.
Increasing development
Due to Brazils increasing development more people can now afford to buy cars. The number of motor vehicles across Brazil continues to rise with a more than 50% increase between 2009-2020.
High levels of air and noise pollution
High levels of air and noise pollution in Rio which often mixes with mist from the Atlantic Ocean creating a brown smog. It is estimated to cause 5000 deaths in Rio each year.
Public transport needs investment and improvement because:
It is very overcrowded, approximately 43% of people travel to work by public transport.
It can be unreliable with trains and subways experiencing regular breakdown which puts people off.
The subway system is limited and only covers certain areas of the city resulting in favela residents not being able to access the system.
The cost of a single bus journey in Rio is one of the most expensive in Brazil meaning it is unaffordable for the poorest.
