Rights Flashcards
What are rights?
Rights are what everyone is entitled to and they are set out by legislation such as the Equality Act 2010
What does this right mean? :
Choice
Everyone has a right to decide which GP they go to, whether to accept a particular treatment, what clothes to wear and what to eat, etc. This gives them control over their lives and promotes independence
What does this right mean? :
Confidentiality
Information about a service user should only be shared on a need to know basis - in other words only with those who are directly involved in the individual’s care. Information must not be shared without their permission (unless it is to protect them or others from harm)
What does this right mean? :
Protection from harm and abuse
Safeguarding procedures should be in place to ensure that vulnerable adults and children are not harmed. Risk assessments should be carried out and a safe environment maintained
What does this right mean? :
Equal and fair treatment
Individuals should be treated in line with the law and their needs. Everyone should be given the same opportunities to access education, health and social care services (NB this does NOT mean treating everyone the same)
What does this right mean? :
Consultation
Individuals have a right to give their opinion and views about the type of care and activities they would like. These views should be taken into account whenever possible
What does this right mean? :
Everyone’s life is protected by law. This means that no one can harm you and you cannot harm anyone else. Everyone’s life should be valued and respected
