Information should be shared openly with family members about children’s learning and development

Early years practitioners need to think about their own practice and plan for development
What is the meaning of ‘Keeping children safe and managing a healthy environment’?
The environment should enable children to feel comfortable and safe. Their environment should encourage a healthy lifestyle and approach to learning
What is the meaning of ‘Working in partnership with other professionals’?
Working with other practitioners is essential for development but should only be carried out with consent
What is the meaning of ‘Maintaining confidentiality of information’?
Private information about children and parents should not be shared with others without consent (unless it is on a need-to-know basis)

Children should be offered a range of experiences and activities that support all aspects of development, i.e. their physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs (PIES)

Children should be put first. They must be listened to. Their needs and views must be considered at all times in order to ensure they are able to grow and develop effectively

Differences between people should be identified as positive. Children should be encouraged to learn about how it is important to be unique

Negative attitudes and prejudices by children and adults should be challenged

Making the welfare of the child paramount
- The manager should carry out DBS checks to ensure all staff in the nursery are suitable to work with young children and don’t have a criminal record
- Using a child-centred approach to ensure activities are planned around the needs of each child. Putting the child’s needs first (children should never be humiliated, abused or smacked)
How could staff at a nursery ensure that each of the Early Years Values of Care is being applied?:
Keeping children safe and maintaining a healthy environment
- Having security measures in place to control access such as a staffed reception, electronic locked doors, visitor ID badges and lanyards, etc.
- Carrying out risk assessments before activities and trips to ensure they are safe
- Testing equipment to make sure it is safe to use
How could staff at a nursery ensure that each of the Early Years Values of Care is being applied?:
Working in partnership with parents/guardians?
- Informal chats with parents about their child’s progress (e.g. if a student has made improvements in their speech)
- Regular newsletters or emails sent to parents about upcoming events in the nursery
- Praise certificates sent home/information sessions held
How could staff at a nursery ensure that each of the Early Years Values of Care is being applied?:
Encouraging children’s learning and development
- Having activities which are intellectually stimulating for the children (books, puzzles, games, etc.)
- Monitoring the child’s progress so that they can provide activities which are suitable and challenging
- Providing support such as through communicators who use sign language (e.g. for students whose language is delayed)

Valuing diversity
- Range of toys to meet different interests and stages of development
- Displays reflecting different cultures of the children that attend the nursery (e.g. celebrating Diwali, Hanukkah, etc.)
