Rigging Flashcards
What does 1:1 mechanical advantage mean?
1:1 = No advantage
The amount of force needed to move load = the load weight
What kind of Mechanical Advantage is a Compound (movable) pully?
2:1 => The length of rope = twice the distance needed to move the load.
What / where is the centre of gravity?
Is the point at which the object will balance
regardless of object being upright, on its side, top bottom or end
What is WLL?
What does WLL describe?
Working Load Limit
The maximum load allowed
What is the safety factor for material and for critical or personal lifts?
5: 1 for material
10: 1 for critical or personnel lifts
Describe what a Turnbuckle does.
It is used to adjust the lengths of slings so loads can be lifted into a level position
What is an important feat that a turnbuckle has?
They are metal sleeves with left internal threads at one end and right internal threads at another.
What importance does a Lock wire have?
They are used to lock the ends of turnbuckles into place.
(In case the ends start to move dt wind or load mvmt)
True or False: Shoulderless eye bolts are okay to use in overhead lifting
False: They should not be used in overhead lifting as the force applied from the side at any angle will break the stem of the bolt.
Load ratings on a shackle must be what?
Must be stamped or embossed on the body of the shackle.
A pin of a shackle snaps, can it be replaced with any pin?
No you must always use the same type of pin with the same rating.
Where does a sling hang off a shackle?
The sling is placed in the bow of the shackle
What does the term, Never Saddle a Dead Horse, mean?
The U portion of a shackle must be installed on the dead end of the line.
(saddle does not go on the dead end)
When using cable clips to create and loop, what are the diameters?
Space bn cable clips = 6 or 7 rope diameters
Distance from rope end to first cable clip = 6 or 7 rope diameters
How many clips needed? rope diameter x 3 -→ round up to the next number
When should new wire rope cable clips be tightened?
After the first hour of service in a new connection
What is this?
Sorting hook -→ used to sort piles
What are hooks usually made of?
Alloy steel
What are softeners?
Any kind of padding that can be placed bn the sling and any sharp corners on the load.
-Protects the load / sling
What must synthetic web slings include?
A tag indicating the WLL
All slings have ID tags
Metal slings have dog tag type ID
What does a Double - wrap basket hitch look like?
What is the best choice for loose bundles / choking out bundles and grabbing it?
Double - wrap choker hitches
What are snatch blocks used for?
Change direction on lift
What must be clearly marked on a Hoist?
The lifting capacity
Lifting capacity must never be exceeded
What type of rope can a lifting medium use?
(Lifting mediums are used with come-alongs)
Chain or Wire rope
What is a Tirfor jack?
They are hand - operated lifting or pulling devices
UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF ROPE TRAVEL
True or False: you can operate a forklift w/o training
False: No person shall operate a forklift w/o taining
The load - lifting capacity of a forklift depends on what?
Spacing of the forks
height
tilt of the mast
floor or ground surface
What is the min safety factor for rigging used to support workers?
10:1
What is the sheet bend used for?
Attaching two ropes of UNEQUAL diameter together
Where should wire rope and fibre slings be stored?
In a dry location off the ground
Why and with what should we lubricate wire rope?
To prevent corrosion and use light oil
How often should rope be inspected?
regularly
How often should hooks be regularly?
Frequently
What do we look for when inspecting eye bolts and ring bolts?
Inspected regularly for wear, cracks, and abrasions
How often should shackles be checked?
Regularly
True or False: You should always pull a load
False: Push a load always to prevent injury or entrapment
What do you have to be familiar with in order to understand whats going on around you?
Standards hand signals and hoisting operations
What is a Boom?
Primary arm of a crane
Acts as a lever
What is Boom radius?
Aka operating radius. Is the horizontal distance from centre of rotation to the hook
What is the Tagline?
Guy-wires used to control crane loads from unwanted rotation or swinging
This allows ground workers to control the load from a safe distance
What is the Whipline (auxillary hoist)?
a second hoist line from the main, usually lighter and faster
Where do you find Crane identification and user information?
Attached to the crane
What capacity does a boom have?
110 tons.
This number reduces as the boom extends or moves closer to horizontal
What are 4 boom styles? (TLFR)
Telescoping
Lattice
Fixed
Rough terrian
What requires mats that are at least 3 times larger than the floats, rigid and rated properly?
Outriggers
What shouldn’t you do with the arm of an outrigger?
Never block the arm.
Only block the float
What is a Counterweight
Supplementary ballast added to the weight of a crane to provide additional stability in a lift.
