What are indications?
Brucellosis in combination with other antibacterials
Staph infections
Endocarditis
TB
What are important side effects?
Nausea
Thrombocytopenia
Vomiting
Important
Effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives is reduced and alternative family planning advice should be offered.
Are they safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Not safe in pregnancy- very high doses shown to be teratogenic in 1st trimester
Breastfeeding- too small to be harmful
What are monitoring requirements?
Renal function should be checked before treatment
Liver function;
Further checks only needed if patient develops, fever, malaise, vomiting, jaundice or unexplained deterioration during treatment
blood counts
alcohol dependence- frequent checks of hepatic function.
What is patient and carer advice?
Soft contact lenses- discolours soft contact lenses
Be aware of hepatic disorders
