What is gingivitis?
What is periodonitis?
Gingivitis=Inflammation of the gums
Periodonitis= Chronic inflammation involving the supporting tissues around the teeth with largely irreversible tissue damage.
What is acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG)?
An acute atypical progressive and painful bacteria infection of the gums with ulceration and necrosis of the dental papillae and bleeding.
Symptoms;
intensely painful
bleeding gum
anorexia;
malaise or fever, which may reach 39°C.
‘Punched-out’ ulcers covered with a white, yellowish, or grey colour
What are risk factors of both gingivitis and periodontitis?
ineffective oral hygiene
cigarette smoking
DM
Local factors; calculus, tooth position, overhanging restorations and partial dentures.
What are symptoms of gingivitis/periodonitis ?
Swollen or puffy gums.
Bright red or dark red gums, or gums that are darker than usual.
Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
Tender gums.
Bad breath.
What are treatment options for gingivitis/periodontitis?
Advise on good oral hygiene
Regular review with hygienist/dentist
What is treatment for ANUG?
Metronidazole 400mg TDS 3 days (200-250mg for children)
or Amoxicillin TDS 500mg
Painkillers
Chlorhexidine 0.12%-0.2% or H2O2 6% mouthwash.
