Ridge Augmentation and Socket Preservation Flashcards
Type of study where it combines results from several studies for best available research on a specific question.
Systematic Review
Pattern of bone loss following an extraction in terms of ridge width and height.
Lose more width than height.
Components of Atraumatic Tooth Extraction
1) Eliminate the infection prior to extraction (antibiotics, Prophy, SRP)
2) Sulcular and surrounding soft tissue should remain undisturbed.
3) Incision in sulcus with a thin scalpel blade (periotome) to cut supracrestal CT fibers.
4) Reduce the crown or section the divergent roots to get a straight path for removal.
Used to cut the supracrestal periodontal fibers in atraumatic tooth extraction.
Periotome
Used to separate the bone from the tooth in atraumatic tooth extraction.
Periotome
Do you recontour the bone in atraumatic tooth extraction?
No bc you want to keep as much bone as possible.
Four Stages of Socket Healing
1) Initial angiogenesis (1-3 weeks)
2) New bone formation (3-4 weeks)
3) Bone growth (4-6 weeks)
4) Bone reorganization (6 weeks - 4 months)
Complete bone fill is called what?
Regeneration
Factors that cause bone repair, rather than healing.
1) Missing labial plate
2) Bony walls less than 1.5 mm thick
3) Infection
4) Excessive heat from a dental drill during root extraction.
Incomplete bone fill is called what?
Repair
At what temperature do osteocytes die?
47 C
A block graft of bone is best for what walled defect?
1-walled (just the floor).
There’s no point in doing socket preservation if you don’t do this.
Place an implant
Why do you have to place an implant within 9-12 months of doing socket preservation?
Because the bone will resorb over time.
Only an implant will prevent that bone from resorbing.
What number wall defect is it if you’re missing the buccal plate?
4- walled
