Ribosomes Flashcards
What are ribosomes?
Ribosomes are tiny organelles that link amino acids together to form proteins. In some regions, the endoplasmic reticulum is studded with ribosomes.
What is the task of the ribosomes?
Ribosomes are both the site of protein synthesis and active participants in the process. After assembly in the nucleolus, ribosomes pass through the nuclear pores
into the cytoplasm.
What happens in the cytoplasm?
In the cytoplasm most protein synthesis occurs.
Where can we find ribosomes?
Ribosomes are on the surface of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. As a protein is being made on these ribosomes, it enters the lumen. Other ribosomes are suspended in the cytoplasm.
What is the difference between proteins made on the ER and proteins made on suspended ribosomes?
Proteins made on the ER are either incorporated into the cell membrane or secreted. Proteine made on suspended ribosomes are user in chemical reactions occuring within the cytoplasm.
