Characteristics of life Flashcards
Which characteristics do living organisms share?
- Living organisms are made up of one or more cells.
- Living organisms grow and develop.
- Living organisms reproduce and produce offspring.
- Living organisms respond to stimuli of the environment.
- Living organisms require energy for their life processes.
- Living organisms contain DNA.
- Living organisms have levels of organization.
- Living organisms are able to move.
- Living organisms excrete.
- Living organisms have a limited duration of existence.
The levels of organization of the human body :
- Cells
- Tissue
- Organs
- Organ systems
- Organism
Way are there things that are difficult to group?
Because the categories of living and nonliving are constructed by humans, and they are not perfect. For example, some things, such as viruses, fall into a middle range between living and nonliving. They show some, but not all, of the characteristics of living things.
Way is there no definition of life?
Because life has many aspects. Life could be an information that manages to survive and continues its living existence, it could also be DNA or a process. That is very confusing and difficult to coordinate, so there is no definition of life.
What is an organism?
An organism is any individual living thing.
How do the characteristics of living things contribute to an organism’s survival (two examples)?
- Living organisms are able to move.
- By movement se can search for resources and escape enemies or factors with a negative effect on the organism or part of it. - Living organisms reproduce and produce offspring.
- By reproduction an individual can reproduce new individuals for the survival of its s pecies.
REMEMBER!
All organisms on Earth share certain characteristics, but an actual definition of life is not simple!
