Mitochondria Flashcards
1
Q
What are mitochondria?
A
Mitochondria are double membrane-bound
organelles found in all eukaryotic organisms. They are bean shaped and the inner membrane has many folds that greatly increase its surface area.
2
Q
What happens within these inner folds?
A
Within these inner folds, a series of chemical reactions converts molecules from the food you eat into usable energy.
3
Q
What is special about mitochondria?
A
Mitochondria have their own ribosomes and DNA. This fact suggests that mitochondria were free-living prokaryotes that were taken in by larger cells.
4
Q
REMEMBER!
A
Mitochondria generate energy for the cell!
