Ribosome Flashcards
What is the purpose of ribosomes in translation?
Catalyze formation of peptide bonds between amino acids
Where are ribosomes typically localized?
ER
What are the two subunits of the prokaryotic subunit?
- 50S (large subunit)
- 30S (Small subunit)
What is the 50S subunit compose of?
23S rRNA, 5S rRNA, lots of proteins
What is the 30S subunit composed of?
16S rRNA and lots of proteins
What are the subunits of ribosomes named for?
Their sedimentation rates
What is sedimentation rate?
Measure of how fast a particle of a certain mass, size and shape settles when subjected to a centrifugal force.
What is the sedimentation of the overall ribosome?
70S NOT 80S (non-additive)
Where does synthesis and assembly of ribosomal subunits occur?
In the nucleus
Where are completely assembled ribosomal subunits sent?
To the cytoplasm
Name the three tRNA binding sites involved in translation.
A-site, P-site, E-site
What occurs in the A-site?
entry of charged tRNA, codon-anticodon recognition
What occurs in the P-site?
Peptide bond formation
What occurs in the E-site?
Empty tRNA exits ribosome.
What is the major function of the 30S subunit?
Aligns two tRNA (one in P-site, other in A-site) via codon-anticodon recognition
