Differences Between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Transcription Flashcards
How is the timing of transcription and translation different in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Since prokaryotes have no nucleus, ribosomes can attach to the RNA and begin translation as transcription is still happening. Due to the presence of the nucleus in eukaryotes, translation cannot happen until transcription is complete.
What is a monocistronic gene? Are eukaroytic genes or prokaryotic genes typically monocistronic?
A gene which codes for a single protein CDS; most eukaryotic genes are monocistronic.
What is a polycistronic gene? In which gene type is this more common?
A gene which codes for multiple protein CDSs in a single molecule of mRNA. Many prokaryotic genes are polycistronic.
