Ribonucleic acids Flashcards
What is RNA a polymer of?
RNA nucleotides
What pentose sugar does RNA have?
Ribose
Bases in RNA:
Adenin, guanine, cytosine and uracil
What are the differences between RNA and DNA?
-RNA is shorter whereas DNA is longer
-RNA has uracil whereas DNA has thymine
-RNA is single stranded whereas DNA is double stranded
-DNA has complementary bases whereas RNA isn’t
What is mRNA?
Messenger RNA carry and direct cells to making proteins
Properties of mRNA:
Single stranded, linear polynucleotide copy of a gene
What is tRNA?
Brings amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis to produce a new sequence + hold them
Properties of tRNA:
Single stranded polynucleotide folded into a cloverleaf shape
What is rRNA?
Help the proteins to function properly as part of the ribosome
Properties of rRNA:
Forms anticodons
