Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged particle that has lost or gained an electron
What does inorganic mean?
Without carbon
Phosphate formula
PO4 3-
Uses in inorganic ions
Found in cytoplasm solution and body fluids of organisms
Use of Hydrogen - H+ ions
-H+ concentration affects acidity of solutions (pH). A low pH = high H+ conc and a high pH = a low H+ conc
-Used in respiration and photosynthesis to provide energy for ATP
Use of Iron - Fe2+ / Fe3+
Structural group of the haem group in haemoglobin, involved in binding to O2
Use of sodium and potassium - Na+ and K+
-Na+ used in co-transport of glucose and amino acids from lumen of small intestine into intestinal epithelial cells
-Na+ and K+ used in nervous conduction
Use of phosphate - PO4 3-
-DNA, RNA and ATP component
-Makes a molecule more reactive when added
-Component of phospholipids which makes up the cell surface and organelle membranes
Use of nitrates - NO3 -
-Taken up from soil by plant roots by active transport
-Sole source of nitrogen used in making amino acids and nucleotides
