Rhabdovirus Flashcards
Rhabdovirus
Properties
– bullet shaped, enveloped, ss(-)RNA, cytoplasm replication
Rabies:
Rabies:
Pathogenesis – bite from infected mammal → viral replication in muscle → ascent via sensory neurons → replication in dorsal ganglion → ascent into spinal cord → infection of cord, brain stem, cerebellum → descending infection to eye, glands, kidney, pancreas
Classic – 80%, prodrome phase (2-10 days) → seizures, hydrophobia, hallucinations (2-7 days) → coma/paralysis → death
Dumb – prodrome phase → paralysis
Histo – Negri bodies (RNP) in neurons, Purkinje cells of cerebellum
G protein – Arg at 333 of G protein = pathogenic, Glu or Iso = non-pathogenic (slow)
Immunity – Humoral immune response → G protein for neutralizing Abs → allows for post-exposure vaccination
Tx – wound treatment, rabies immunoglobulin at the wound site, inactive vaccine (Imovax, RabAvert)
